Geison Mesquita

Biologist from the Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA), specialist in Natural Science from the Universidade Federal do Piauí (UFPI), with a Master’s degree in Biodiversity from the Universidad de Barcelona (UB) and a Ph.D. in Biodiversity Conservation from the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB). He has worked as a research collaborator in biodiversity and conservation biology at the Institut de Recerca de la Biodiversitat (IRBio/UB) and as a collaborator in the Biological Sciences program at UFMA. Additionally, he has coordinated projects on game fauna conservation, as well as socio-environmental and ethnobiology initiatives in traditional communities within the Amazon and Cerrado biomes. As a research collaborator at the Instituto Baguaçu de Pesquisa em Biodiversidade (IBPBio), he has led projects focused on biodiversity conservation and management, as well as environmental monitoring using new technologies such as Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), geoprocessing, and machine learning. His work integrates these technologies with traditional knowledge, fostering innovative approaches to environmental conservation.
He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of São Paulo (USP) as part of the SargaSTREAM project. He contributes to strengthening the blue economy in traditional communities in Brazil by integrating scientific and traditional knowledge to improve the management of Sargassum landings.
