Educational Lead (Mexico), Educational Guides and Transdisciplinary Training on Sargassum blooms.
Applied Phycology Laboratory, Center for Research and Advances Studies of the National Polythecnic Institute (Cinvestav Mérida, Mexico)
I am a postdoctoral researcher in Marine Sciences at the Applied Phycology Laboratory, Cinvestav Mérida, Mexico, with more than 14 years of experience in seaweed ecology and taxonomy, applied phycology, and citizen science. I am also a member of the National Research System, Mexico (SECIHTI SNI – Level 1, 2023-2027), and the State Registry of Researchers, Yucatán, Mexico (REI, 2023-2027), the Academic Secretary of the Mexican Society of Phycology (SOMFICO, 2023-2025) and the Phycological Society of Latin America and the Caribbean (SOFILAC, 2024-2028).
My research focuses on monitoring and characterizing Sargassum blooms and marine macrophyte strandings, citizen science for monitoring seaweed strandings, ecology and taxonomy of seaweeds, and aquaculture of seaweeds of commercial interest. My experience in creating and developing citizen science projects has allowed the exchange of knowledge with local communities in response to environmental issues of concern. I am currently leading the project France Team Fund (FEF) Sargasso Mexico: State of the art, a critical diagnosis to guide future research (2024-2025); and I am collaborating in BIOMAS project on Sargassum (ANR-22-SARG-0003, 2023-2027) and in SargaSTREAM project on the educational line on Sargassum, leading the development and delivery of transdisciplinary courses for citizen training, creation of educational content and scientific dissemination materials.
My primary interest is contributing to generating scientific knowledge to address complex socio-environmental problems, promoting knowledge exchange and communication with affected sectors through transdisciplinary work to find solutions adapted to local contexts and their specific needs.
